For almost 25 years I’ve been playing Star Fleet Battles and its derivatives, and while I’m still no expert, I know as much about them as anyone who has played them for any length of time. Ironically, it’s not that I’m that enamored with Star Trek or the Star Trek universe, but more that I’m fascinated by the level of detail that Amarillo Design Bureau (ADB) has put into the game, as well as the idea of big, cool-looking spaceships chewing through one another with energy weapons.
To say that I am a fan of Alien Frontiers is a bit of an understatement. I have been playing that game since the second run and it comes onto my table more often than any other game.
So when the Factions Kickstarter came up, I just had to back it. More friends to share the game has to be a good thing, right?
You thought we had forgotten the UK Games Expo? Well, I am pleased to say no! The goodness continues to sip through as we put together the videos of the interviews the Uk Gaming Media Network carried out. This time, it is my pleasure to bring you the interview with Andrei Novac, one of the minds behind NSKN Legendary Games, creators of Warriors & Traders, a game that mixes strategy with euro mechanics very, very nicely. But since we already have a video unboxing Warriors & Traders, I spoke with Andrei about Wild Fun West and Exodus: Proxima Centuri. And yes, that makes Spiel 2012 even more attractive.
Before I start, I just have to say, I love me some Blood Bowl! I’ve been a fan since I was a teenager and still have the same set that I bought back then. I’m going to show my age a little here, but not in old way and say I just missed out on the kick ass foam board, and had to settle for card. This didn’t stop me and my high school wargaming group buying three teams each and running so many leagues we actually had promotions and relegations, with knock-out championships and a lucrative transfer market, even though we could only get together to play on weekends.
Ok, so for the second Unboxed review I thought I’d go a bit old school. This is Games Workshop’s Dungeonquest, I don’t have the Swedish original (which is still available btw and is called Drakborgen: Legenden (“Dragon Castle: The Legend”) and is produced by the Swedish game company Alga.) The story goes that a couple of Games Workshop employees discovered this game in Sweden and they loved it so much that they brought it back with them, word got around GW HQ and soon the bosses were begging for a licence to produce it in the U.K.

There has been a great deal of hand-wringing about the lack of what people are calling “true criticism” in the board game industry, of late. What the hand-wringers are wringing wildly about is the idea that there aren’t enough truly in-depth reviews on games, or games that speak from a level of experience; from the perspective of someone who has either mastered the game or has a trained enough eye to be able to spot the flaws in the gem that is a boardgame without actually having played it to death.
