Social skills – Are gaming geeks as bad as they say we are?

On my way back from a family trip, I sat down in the train and got out my Gigax Magazine #2, eager to get started and find out what improvements have been made from issue one. Not what it needed that many improvements, mind you.

One of the articles I read – rather voraciously, I hasten to add – was Jess Hartley’s “From One Geek to Another. An etiquette guide for gamers”. The article states the intention of the series is to help us geeks interact with each other by discussing and working on our social skills.

RPG Killers

It came to me recently that generally, when we play an RPG, we have no problem killing anything that threatens us. Organic or not, aberration or natural creature, extraplanar or our very own kin. If we jump on a fight in a game, we’re able to kill our enemy without even blinking an eyelid in contemplation or remorse.

UK Games Expo 2013. An experience!

And then the UK Games Expo arrived. WOW!

For starters the venue this year was changed. We were located at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole, which is pretty much adjacent to Birmingham NEC and the Airport. Easy to get to by train and plane. The hotel is pretty huge and it was able to accommodate the more than 7000 people the Expo saw last year. And the extra 3000 that have attended this year. It was pretty amazing!

Conpulsion

In my attempt to visit as many countries as possible and met as many gamers as my brain will possibly be able to remember, this year I decided to take a couple of days and visit Conpulsion, in Edinburgh.
