Seven Dragons

Looney Labs are surely specialists in simple, fast playing, family games and this looks like it fits the model. Based on an earlier published game, Aquarius, this is a dominoes-like game for 2-5 players age 6+ where the object is to be the first to play your cards and connect 7 Dragons.

Star Fluxx card game

You see, I’d never played the original game Fluxx from the good folks from Looney Labs and I assume that I am one of the few gamers out there for whom Fluxx never came to my attention. There is certainly mixed opinion about the Fluxx games system which has spawned a number of variations on the core theme. It seems that a lot of “serious” gamers who don’t like randomness in their games don’t like it. But there is clearly a following of fans as well.

Let’s Take a Hike

One of the joys of going to Essen Spiel is that for all the research you do amongst the load of new releases, there will still be surprises in games that you may or may not have heard about. I was given a review copy of a little card game called Let’s Take a Hike from Stratamax Games and was indeed pleasantly surprised with it.

Panic Station

Over the last few years we have seen quite a few cooperative style games and I am certainly a fan. I really like the sense of tension and spirit of teamwork that comes with cooperative games. Kind of an “us against the world” thing. As with anything, you certainly can get too much of a good thing and we are certainly in danger of too much of the “same old” in cooperative games.

Spiel 2012 day one summary
