As pretty much everyone knows by now, I love most dexterity games, but even more than that, I truly love science fiction. Even more than that, I truly love 4X conquest games, so when I heard about Ascending Empires, it immediately folded space into the forefront of games I wanted to buy.
Whoever designed this game must be some sort of planning and structuring genius. Tales of the Arabian Nights is a cross between a board game and the Choose Your Own Adventure books I enjoyed in my youth – only the adventure book that comes with it contains more than 2,000 different paragraphs
I first spotted this Agricola-style worker-placement game in my local gaming store, David’s in Brighton. I really liked the cover art, which was very thematically earthy in its colour scheme and text style, and the blurb on the back of the box sounded intriguing too (“With a balance of luck and planning, the players compete for food in this pre-historic time”).

Sometimes is nice to be able to see what you buy before you actually buy it, and this is why
Shake n’ Take is a quick, manic game from Out Of The Box Games. The game is pretty simple. Each player has a dry-erase board sheet containing a multitude of different-shaped aliens. One player takes the role of Alien Hunter and is armed with a rather funky pen topped with a great green alien head.
Richard Borg has designed a series of games based on a similar system – Battle Cry, Memoir 44, Battlelore, Command & Colors Ancients and more latest incarnation of the system is Command & Colors Napoleonics.
