This installment of Super Genius Games’ Loot 4 Less is legendary by now – the first Krazy Kragnar-pdf! It is 9 pages long, 2/3 of a page front cover, 1 page SRD & editorial, (one page also contains a neat little cartoon by industry legend Stan!, which I consider content), leaving 7 1/3 pages of content for USED CHARIOTS!

I’m a bit hyped here. I LOVE vehicles and vehicle combat and chariots are such an awesome, iconic and underused staple in fantasy that seeing a pdf devoted to them made me cackle with glee.

In contrast to other L4L-titles, this pdf begins by introducing us to 2 basic types of vehicle, the chariot and the houdah, both of which essentially are featured herein. A rather neat discussion explains the item-class and how the respective items were created. Quick rules for hp, hardness and even the aspect of introducing their “used” quality before giving us the items:

In total, we get 11 wagons. From the rather basic bladed chariot and it’s armoured bigger brother, the Laager Wain to ballista-studded chariots, we get some nice war-toys, but useful wagons are not left out: From the Folding Cart (land-born brother to the folding boat) to a chariot that stabilizes you automatically (or gentle reposes you, should you perish) to an auto-repairing wagon (that can also repair items left inside – convert this and take it with you on Jade Regent!), a neat selection of items is presented. The most interesting one, at least for me, is the vaporsteel chariot: Light as a feather (and subject to feather fall) it is the perfect rules-frame for any kind of aerial chariot.

Conclusion:

Editing and formatting are top-notch, I didn’t notice any glitches. Layout adheres to the 3-column full-colour standard by SGG. The pdf has no bookmarks and artworks are of the usual quality. I’ll come right out and say it: I want a sequel. No, a bigger book. 128 pages of vehicles and vehicular combat. I love this pdf and would love to see e.g. an update for the caravan-rules with regards to the wagons, chariots etc, but oh well, this pdf was here before the Jade Regent path, so it is not fair to hold that one against it. I love this book, have neither balance, nor formal complaints against it and will thus settle for a final verdict of 5 stars and the endzeitgeist seal of approval. If you haven’t, go check this one out.

Endzeitgeist out.
