After playing the amazingly fun “Conquest of the Fallen Lands”, I started looking into the publisher, Assa Games, to see what they’re all about. It turns out that it is essentially a two-man show, and they had produced a second game after Fallen Lands.
I recently got my order filled by Small Box Games, which included the new, and very fun, A Lone Banner. It’s a light wargame that looks very simple at first glance, but is surprisingly fun and is easily the quickest Small Box Games product to learn and play.

Flaggo is the creation of George Allen and it is a self published game. If you know anything about game publishing, you’ll know it is not easy. To do self publishing takes a lot of effort, a lot of work and a lot of passion. Not to mention a lot of money!
This game is a tile-based romp where the players are heroic types who need to rid the countryside of all the nasties that tend to overrun said countrysides. You do this by retaking territories, which are comprised solely of the tiles themselves, and to retake a territory, you simply need to have enough soldiers to take that territory.
Germantown is a hex-and-counter war game for 2 players. The game only has one scenario, and it takes about 2-3 hours to play. Mark Miklos designed it and GMT published it in 2010.
You are Indiana Jones (although you may look like a skittle style pawn) racing through the jungles of Cambodia towards the sacred Bakong temple in search of emeralds. To make it through you’ll need to have the right equipment and plenty of space in your pack to haul the loot out. Race through jungles, into caves, over quicksand, across rivers, down waterfalls and up cliffs, and triumph as the best treasure hunter of all.
The premise of Alien Frontiers is that two to four players are all vying to colonize a planet for their own evil designs, using resources and orbital stations to produce the colonies to be built in eight geographical regions of varying strategic value. Using a fleet of ships, which are represented by D6 dice, you can claim docking ports on each orbital station to use the stations’ abilities to both further your cause as well as deny your opponents the opportunity to use the station that you’ve chosen.
First of all I will make this very clear; I am a game player -a big, big games fan. I have been playing videogames, board games and role playing games since I was a child and they have had a massive impact in developing my imagination, my visualisation skills, my social skills and even my empathy skills. This is important for me to make clear since the start of this article because I want everyone to know that I am biased. Yes, I believe in games as a medium to develop healthy personality traits and interaction skills.
