Podcast Interview: Twelve Pins Press with Laurie O’Connel

Twelve Pins Press is a small indie publisher run by Laurie O’Connel with a terrific bunch of games, one of the most recent ones being Full Send, a game about mountaineering for three-to-five players.

In it, players take on the role of professional climbers caught between their passion for the sport, personal obligations, and the pressures of everyday life.

Part freeform slice-of-life and part tactical sports RPG, play to find out if make your name as a climbing legend, or die trying.

Full Send’s innovative mechanics utilise a single tarot deck. Major Arcana cards are used to procedurally generate mountains and obstacles, while the Minor Arcana are used in a unique trick-taking game which determines how successful climbers are in their attempts to summit. As climbers earn fame and glory, they make steps to improve their quality of life and invest in their performance on the mountain. But the longer life goes on, the more their luck is running down. And on the mountains, a single mistake can cost you everything.

Mechanically complex and narratively satisfying, this new game from writer Laurie O’Connel is packed with facts and stories about mountaineering, and features detailed prewritten summits for five of the world’s most famous mountains.
