I’d heard about Settlers of Catan a hundred billion times, at least, as it’s widely called “The Fazzer Of Ze Euroz Gaming”, and I’ve heard it panned by Ameritrash folks as a gaming atrocity. The last of the 5 DVDs we created. We end the series with some of the best interviews we recorded at the show. It was a pretty spectacular show this year with some genuinely amazing games and new companies being seen for the first time, and new trend of companies that have never created boardgames taking some first steps into the industry. Also a lot of new companies, very often with just one or two people at the helm.
One of the biggest (if not the biggest) supporter of the UK Games Expo is Mayfair games. The publishers and brains behind Settlers of Catan pretty much anywhere in the world make the heck of an effort to support conventions and exhibitions such as this, and we were lucky enough to catch up with Larry Roznai, the biggest brain in Mayfair, and ask him a bunch of questions about a bunch of everything.
Now I will state up front that I’m not a huge fan of many Martin Wallace games as for the most part they are too “EuroGamey” for me. It’s a game style preference issue, nothing to do with the quality of his games. But I certainly bow to his obvious creativity and talent in board game design without question and interestingly, when I interviewed him at this year’s UK Expo, I found out that he is a long time war gamer.
