UK Games Expo 2013. An experience!

And then the UK Games Expo arrived. WOW!

For starters the venue this year was changed. We were located at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole, which is pretty much adjacent to Birmingham NEC and the Airport. Easy to get to by train and plane. The hotel is pretty huge and it was able to accommodate the more than 7000 people the Expo saw last year. And the extra 3000 that have attended this year. It was pretty amazing!

X-Wing

Well, I had a buddy over yesterday for an X-Wing game day, and after playing my third game, I was hooked. If you want me to just cut to the chase, here goes: X-Wing is the smartest, most entertaining fighter skirmish game I’ve ever played. This says a lot, because I’ve played probably twenty of these games, from Full Thrust to Renegade Legion to Battle Fleet Mars to A Call To Arms; I’ve got a lot of experience with these games and X-Wing is easily the most approachable and tightest. The draw, for me, is that the game hits that magical sweet spot where complexity and practicality intersect. Very few games ever hit that spot, generally erring either on the side of simulation or oversimplification. X-Wing, however, gets it absolutely perfect, with enough complexity to make it a game worth playing while having very simple, understandable, and intuitive rules that don’t get in the way of the players. It literally blows every other fighter combat game into itty bitty rippy bits.

Before I start, I just have to say, I love me some Blood Bowl! I’ve been a fan since I was a teenager and still have the same set that I bought back then. I’m going to show my age a little here, but not in old way and say I just missed out on the kick ass foam board, and had to settle for card. This didn’t stop me and my high school wargaming group buying three teams each and running so many leagues we actually had promotions and relegations, with knock-out championships and a lucrative transfer market, even though we could only get together to play on weekends.

Nexus Ops first play review

This game is about imperialistic interplanetary conquering, invasion and resources exploitation. This game is not about going to a planet and invading it. This game is about going to a planet with your clones (why use unique humans!) and using the existing residents and creatures to fight against each other in order to get you Rubium and victory points to win the game.

Unboxing: Nexus Ops

Recently I got this game base purely on the number of miniatures supplied and the very reasonable price tag. Knowing it is a Fantasy Flight Games, I reckon there is a good chance it is a good game as well. In this video I take a look at the components. This is not a review…
